The by-pass mechanism is designed so that the by-pass remain closed until the hood sash is about two-third closed and then should be open progressively in proportion with sash travel to the fully closed position. As the sash is closed air entering the hood is redistributed. i.e, it enters from by-pass above the sash and below the sash. High velocity drafts that might upset the work inside the hood are avoided when the sash is partly closed. The hood can be operated safely by raising or closing the sash.

The hood exhaust volume and the room air balance essentially is unchanged even when the sash is fully closed. The by-pass hood operates at constant volume.

Conventional fume hood consists of vertical or vertical/horizontal sliding front sash and interior baffle. The hood is designed for constant exhaust volume with all air flow passing through the sash opening. With the sash down, face velocity increases to maximum. As the sash fully closed air enters through the air foil and confines the generated fumes and gases.

Auxiliary air hoods uses exhaust air from two sources, the room supply air and an auxiliary supply air from outside. The proportion of this auxiliary air mix may vary from 30 to 70% of the total amount exhausted through the hood.

The design would save considerable thermal energy particularly in the warmer months of the year. These hoods reduce the volume of conditioned room air exhausted there by reducing the overall cooling load. Make up air to the auxiliary air hood should be heated during the heating season so that cold, moist, dense outside air does not fall below the face opening. The hood exhaust volume and the room air balance essentially is unchanged even when the sash is fully closed. The by-pass hood operates at constant volume.

When the auxiliary air is introduced across or infront of the opening the flow pattern of the auxiliary air stream is critical to hood performance. The air balance must be carefully maintained for proper hood performance.
